PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Closet Diaries

Closet Diaries

I am sure that most of my readers probably think that I am very organized and put-together. Well, I'm here to tell you that most of you all are wrong. I, my friends, am a hot-mess.

I am very very organized with tasks that I perform. Take work, for instance- I am very organized and keep well-documented excel sheets, emails, etc.

My closet, on the other hand, is a complete disaster. Clothes are everywhere. Shoes are everywhere. Clothes are piled on top of each other in "organized clutter". Multiple shirts hang on "one" hanger because I ran out of hangers a long time ago.

Don't even get me started on our attic. Our attic is basically our "storage unit". I realized I was crazy when I listed a purse on my blog yardsale that I thought I still had ... turns out when someone purchased it from my blog yardsale and I went to look for it, I couldn't find it ANYWHERE. I had sold it on Ebay months before and just failed to remember because I thought it was in my attic. Yes, I know that is bad.

My gmail inbox is atrocious. I don't know what I would do if gmail weren't able to perform "search inbox" functions. My inbox number stays at "85" ... if it hits "86", I know I have a new email. Yes, I am one of those people.

Also, I keep ALL of the mail we get delivered to our house. They are all in a pile on my entry-way table. Why do I have anxiety about throwing away mail that we don't need?

Reality-check: I need to organize my life. I have been a hot-mess for months: moving 4 times last year, getting engaged, planning a wedding, getting a house, getting a new job ... all of these things are now in place- now I just need to get with it!

I have found this website to be of much help:

www.lifehacker.com

With tips anywhere from organizing your inbox to organizing your closet, this website is great!

You go girl .... it's almost like a 12 step program ...

I'm in the process of 'decluttering' my life - starting with my closet FIRST! I actually am going to post the pictures that I took -- the BEFORE pictures. UGH!! BUT it's coming along ...

Good Luck ... throw away the mail though. :) I swear, we COULD be IRL friends - we are so much alike.

Heading to check out lifehacker.com -- NOW!

You sound so much like me that it's scary! My work life is so neat and tidy- but my personal life is a disaster. My work friends can not believe that I am such a Jekyll and Hyde from work (Color Coded Excel sheets are my specialty) and home is a pile of clothes on the floor. I'll be looking forward to reading about your updates! You've inspired me to try too!

Oh my goodness. That is so totally my life.

Mr. Magnolia and I have moved four times in the past four years; one of those was a condo where we only stayed for six months. I haven't unpacked a lot of my boxes for so long that I can't even imagine what the contents look like or why I still have them.

Thanks for pointing out lifehacker.com. I can't wait to take a look!

I have to say I can't relate, I throw everything away much to my husband's dismay and basically stay pretty organized. For me, you have to have a system in place that works for you. A bunch of organization techniques that you won't do, aren't going to help.

That website is awesome though, hopefully you can find some great tools!

... I will give you my mail tip. When you bring it in daily, immediately take it your desk or the kitchen and sort a "keep" pile and a "toss" pile. Then open the "keep" pile and toss what you don't need. I never keep envelopes or extra inserts, just the main part of the mail I need.

Good luck, from a neat person I can promise you that having things in order at home makes such a difference!

I am OCD about staying organized. My closet is in color order. One thing Hubby and I found helpful for our keys, etc. is a three tiered basket shelving thing from Target. I used to lose my keys all the time and now I just put them in the basket as soon as I get home.

I am totally the same way! I am so organized with work and school but everything else...forget it, I'm such a disaster. My closet is a mess, my inbox is SO full, and every drawer in my kitchen (umm...and dresser, and desk, and pretty much every drawer in my apartment) is just filled with crap! Thanks for posting about this website!

I am the exact same way. Glad to know I am not the only one.

I can totally relate! I am so organized at work but shudder when I think about my closet or my car. And don't even get me started on my inbox. I have been trying to organize and I am finally at 867 emails in my inbox. The search function is my best friend!

I am the exact same way...my inbox reads an embarassing "582"...yep, you read that right "582"...

I have OCD and sometimes I feel like I place too much energy in the wrong things so sometimes I feel like stuff does not get done. I recommend these blogs as well. I have found great tips about organization and most importantly, productivity.

I am currently in the process of organizing my closet now! It is SUCH a task and I still have ooodles to do. I have tackled the clothes, but I still have shoes, jewelry and sweaters to do too. It is like a never-ending task.

You are not alone with the clutter!

My gmail account is at 1188 (that's the number it stays at) and my facebook inbox is at 34. I get the emails sent straight to my phone, so I usually read them on my phone then forget to delete them on the computer. My closet is also a complete disaster and even before I read your post, I had my mind made up that I'd organize it this weekend. So glad to know I'm not alone in this! My husband can't stand my "organized chaos"!

I seriously thought I was the only person in the world who kept all of her mail. Everything. I'm really not sure why I can't throw it away. It sits in a basket and stares at me....

But your on your own with your closet! I saw that on Twitter, you did a GREAT job organizing it! Mine stays ridiculously organized. I guess it's my "thing". My freakness or something.

I really want to check out this website...

I am anal-retentive when it comes to neatness and organization...right now, some things are out of whack at my house in terms of organization and it is making me CRAZY!

If I were you, I would organize the clsoet first. Once you free up space there, it will help you figure out the attic situation. In terms of the mail, grab the stack of mail that currently lives at your house...go around and collect any mail that may have ended up in other places. Sit down and open it all and sort it out (bills, junk, etc.). Figure out what can be tossed (or shredded) and then deal with the rest.Once you take down the mega-pile, it will seem much more manageable from here on out.
