PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Changing a Name

Changing a Name

Sidenote: this picture was taken at the lovely Shelby County Clerk's Office at 8 am in the morning the Thursday before we got married. I was less than thrilled to be in downtown Memphis that early.

Okay, I am married. Great. Now comes the fun stuff -- Name changing!

What should I do first? What am I required to change? What could I get away with without changing? This is the kind of stuff I hate to do ... I hate calling CC companies and other places because I know I will be on the phone forever.

I was reading blue eyed bride last night and saw that she waited a year. I think I will most likely be like her with this endeavor.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend :)

Um, Does it make me a terrible wife because I have not yet legally changed mine? I've been married since March 29, 2008. It is such a HASSLE! I go by husband's last name socially, of course, but my I DREAD the paper work and phone time! Ha! I need to get on it!
Congrats on the marriage! Your pictures are beautiful!

Love that picture! hahaha You look so enthused! hee hee

I'm not changing my name at all for those very reasons! It's hard enough when you live in the states, but in order to do it from here, I think it would be impossible without long and multiple trips home... ugh! Goodluck!!!

Haha! I love that your giving the thumbs up but have the look of "I want to kill someone" on your face! I hate getting up and being downtown that early too!

It is a process, not hard, just takes some time. I still haven't changed my credit cards, oh well.

It was a random link I found but it is a basic, easy list to follow. Worked for me!

I didn't change my name for a year. Everytime I went to Social Security, it was such a pain that I would leave.
Then I got pregnant and decided it would make life much easier if we had the same last name, ha!

I will say the DMV wasn't too bad thought. And all my CC still carry my maiden name.

Happy weekend!

Um, you are adorable with your "action shots"! I would pay close attention to driver's license and passport; I've heard that there is soon to be higher scrutiny on this for boarding planes. The other stuff, when you get to it. Of course, one of the hundred thousand reasons I drag my feet with wedding planning...

I didn't find it to be that bad. The big ones (in my opinion) are DMV, Social Security, & Passport. I went to the DMV in the middle of the day during the work week so I didn't even have to wait 5 minutes. I went to the SS office right when it opened and freaked out when I saw the line of people waiting outside the door. It turns out they have a special line for people doing stuff like changing names, etc...so it actually only took like 10 minutes. Good luck - don't be scurred - its easy!

The easiest was changing my drivers license - just took a copy of my marriage license with me and no problems. I have also changed my passport. Still haven't legally changed it with SS because we only have one office in the big city I live in - and the time I went it was a very long wait. And something about mailing my marriage license to them makes me nervous. However, in Memphis there are several satellite SS offices - I went to the one off germantown parkway when they opened to get a replacement card before i got married and was in and out in about 10 minutes!

I had to laugh when I saw you post this morning. I posted about the same thing in my blog yesterday.
I got married in July and I still haven't even thought about changing my name. For some reason I'm really struggling with dropping my maiden name. I haven't changed my name because I haven't decided what to change it to...I'm seriously considering hypenating it.
I haven't even looked into how you actually change your name so I'm not much help there.

I agree with the other comments that you should focus first on driver's license, social security number, and passport. Credit cards can wait - it took me twelve (12!) years to change the name on my NM card.

I just got married in June last year and I changed my driver's license, SS card, everything else is still in my maiden name. I have not had ANY trouble with it, I'm just changing it as I go along...

I am still working on changing my name with everyone and it has been over a year. I did get my name legally changed with social security first which helps if you are going to go on your husband's insurance and other such stuff. And some states such as Alabama require that social security be changed first.
My trip to the office was easy since they had a separate line for name changers from all other cases. I was there about 30 mins.
And then driver's license is important after that.
Other than that I say change the other documents as you are already dealing with them. (i.e. your credit card is due to expire..call just before that.) You go to the bank and have a few free minutes sign a new signature form.
I have one bank left and one credit card left that i can remember. I just changed my etrade account (Talk about difficult, try dealing with a "bank" that has no branch office to make the worker do all the dirty work.)
Oh yeah...I need to work on the passport soon...If you fly internationally your name has to match the passport regardless of what your name is legally.

Always take a copy and the real marriage license because some offices might require to see the real one.

There should be a website or something dedicated to this! Someone who is web savvy should work on this :) I don't know if I could part with my name, its so unusual I want to keep it! :)

I waited a full year to change my name....nothing like good old procrastination! But really it wasn't that bad!

I waited two years simply because I never got around to taking a day to go hang out at the social security office! I'll tell you what though - I got credit cards in my married name almost immediately after the wedding, and changed all my info, and not one CC company cared what name was on the bill. Weird, huh?

it's definitely a pain, but I did my social security card first. Then when you change everything else, you just have to show them the SS card. Most credit card companies will tell you to fax in proof of the change (meaning your SS card) and then they will send you a new card. The credit cards weren't too bad actually. Oh and I didn't send in my passport to be changed until I had a driver's license in my possesion. . don't want to be without an ID :)
Good luck!

Congratulations Mrs. Pretty in Pink!

Ok I have a question....don't make fun of me...what is the official name of the LV bag you are carrying?

okay, I've been married for exactly 11 months and I have changed my name legally but I haven't at my bank (we have seperate accounts which by the way works GREAT!), credit cards, or at work!!
By the way, I miss Bergdorf Blondes!! I hope everything is okay and I can't believe some psycho ruined our fun!!

My anniversary is next week and I still haven't changed my name on everything. I did take my husband's name (easier with all the stuff with the AF), but that almost didn't happen because of the long wait at the DMV. My home is still in my maiden name and the utilities stayed in my name...MLGW wanted me to come down and show proof of name change. I said "No thanks".

I used one of those name change kits, it helped for all the forms. The worst part is waiting in line for SSN, and then drivers license. Wait on banking stuff, there's no rush. Good luck though
