I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was so hot here in Memphis. Today it was 90 degrees and they are saying that tomorrow it will be up to 95 degrees! I, for one, do not like the extreme heat. I don't see how people lay out in this weather. I'd much rather stick to my spray tan and be indoors in the AC!
Okay, so we might qualify for the smallest kitchen ever award. Seriously, our kitchen is probably the size of some of y'alls pantries. Our house was built in the 40's and our kitchen has never been updated, so it's a little old school. When we first moved in I wasn't sure what to do with the shelving above our sink. At first I had it decorated with picture frames and candles. Once we started getting all of our everyday china, I quickly realized that we had NO room to put anything. This is what I've come up with ... I moved all of our everyday china and wine glasses to the exposed shelving. I am thinking if we ever update our kitchen I can get a glass door to cover the shelving. Does this look stupid? I think it will suffice for now ... we just have no room!
Also, I wanted to share with everyone the best carrot cake recipe ever! It's from cooking light and it is simply divine! I think I ate half the cake in the first couple of days. The cream cheese icing gets me every time!

I think the dishes and glasses look great on the exposed shelves. I've even seen it where people will paint the wall behind or hang a cool fabric behind the dishes so the pop visually. Either way I like it!
I think exposed shelving (especially in a quaint older home) looks very vintage & cozy! I had a friend with the smallest kitchen EVER and she ripped the doors off of all of her cabinets to make them all exposed shelves and painted them a pretty color. As long as they are organized it looks nice!
Mmmm...Carrot cake! That is my favorite :)
I adore the look of exposed shelving! It looks great in modern and traditional or older homes. It's very cute, and you keep it nice looking by using a monotone palette. I love it! Thanks for sharing the recipe :)

I love the exposed shelving!! I think it looks great!! Such a fun way to show off your china, too!!
very cute kitchen -love the exposed dishes!
I think your kitchen looks great!
Looks great!
I can only stand laying out if I'm on some kind of float in the pool - like the kind with a mesh bottom so the water keeps me cool. 95 degrees is HOT!!! shew wee!
I think the exposed shelves in the kitchen look fine- and I really like emilia's idea of painting the wall behind or hanging a piece of fabric. I would have never thought to do that (I'm not very handy with home decorating), but it's a really neat idea!
That carrot cake looks yummy. I wish it'd be 90 degrees here, it's been having a really hard time heating up here in Colorado this summer. Tomorrow the forecasted high is in the low 50's! And I don't even live in the mountains! AAAACK! I want some hot, sunny days!
I love the exposed shelves! And now I need to go make some carrot cake :)
I think your kitchen looks cute!!
The kitchen looks great! I am going to print that recipe right now and plug it into the WW points thing to see how many points it would be. Thanks!
I love carrot cake, I'll have to try this one out!
I like exposed dishes and glasses--they look so pretty, and are easy to get to! We had a teeny kitchen in our first house as well--we had to use our cupboards as the pantry (because there wasn't one) and thus we had zero space for dishes ans the like.
Always good to find a light version of a delicious cake!
