PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: A little obsessed with skin care ...

A little obsessed with skin care ...

I will be the first to admit that I am obsessed with skin care. I have tried it all, forking out hundreds of dollars on face creams, eye creams, oxygen facials, etc. I am currently using the Obagi C-Rx system, which I actually like, but it was quite pricey.

I went to the dermatologist yesterday for my annual "mole-check". My dermatologist commented on my skin and said, "Wow, you have great skin, what do you use?" When I told him that I used Obagi he replied, "Oh, around here we call that stuff JUNK." I was a little taken back until he handed me an article written by the New York Times entitled, "The Cosmetic Restriction Diet". Basically, it's a movement by dermatologists to promote cheap skin care products, because they claim that they contain the exact same ingredients as the pricey products. He told me that Oil of Olay regenerist has the exact same ingredients as expensive creams and that if looked at under a microscope, they look identical.

This was my favorite quote from the entire article, because I am fascinated with foolish claims, such as exotic cremes or oils:

"THE back-to-basics skin-care regimen is based on practicality rather than marketing claims. It does not rely on exotic ingredients grown on far-flung islands hand-picked by natives only under a full moon."

I still don't know if I but into all of this, but I thought you all would want to read the article. It's actually quite interesting.

Here is the link: The Cosmetic Restriction Diet

On another note, he was more than impressed with my eyelashes and immediately asked me if I was using Latisse. He made all of the nurses come in and look at my lashes. :)

Great article... I am not sure what to think either, but it's an ego boost to think that since I can't afford the latest and greatest that I can still take care of my skin....But seriously, I would just love to take back those years I baked myself in tanning beds...

I have used some pricier products in the past, but for the last year I have been using the Oil of Olay Regenerist line and I love it! I think my skin looks better with it than anything else I've tried!

It is true that some of the best products are the cheapest! I have been using some old-stand-bys for years and I have great skin! I also rely on certain Rx meds (Retin A) because there really is nothing like it on the market (in that degree of strength) and it is PROVEN that it works!

I'm going to my dermatologist soon; so, I'm going to discuss skin care lines with him as well. I would love to find a cheap version that works!

I think it is kind of funny that he complimented how great your skin looked, and then called the product you use to get the great skin "junk". Seems a little contradictory! But Im all for a good cheap product so Ill have to try the Olay.

Thanks for sharing the article! I can't wait to try the Olay Regenerist now. At least until I can afford to have all of the sun damage from my reckless youth lasered off of my face. And, I'm going to try Latisse in August so I hope my results are as dramatic as yours!

I have such sensitive skin and have been using Dove sensitive skin beauty bars for facewash-- terrible I know! But it's the only think that keeps me from breaking out into a rash... however, my complexion isn't looking as young as it once did-- maybe I'll have more luck with the Oil of Olay. Thanks for the article!

I have to say, nothing has worked as well for me (for cleansing) as Cetaphil.

I'm also SUPER obsessed with skin care. It's a sick addiction & I'm constantly trying new things even if what I have works. I love it! I'm interested in reading the article though - thanks for the link!

Thanks for posting such an interesting article. I am always convinced that pricier is better and will work miracles with my acne-prone skin, but usually go back to Cetaphil and Neutrogena. My husband will definitely like that article as it might mean less money spent at Sephora. . .or less money on skin care at least.

I just switched to Oil of Olay myself after having a breakout disaster with Philosophy. I couldn't stomach spending so much on face care, so I went cheap and love it! Glad to know the professionals are on my side. I will have to try the Regnerist line though....

PS Love your new haircut. Cameron Diaz...eat your heart out!

I loveeeee the Oil of Olay Regenerist! It's relatively expensive for the "cheap stuff," but it really does work great! :)

I have tried EVERYTHING ..... seriously. Spent a small fortune on skincare and I have read a LOT about Olay Regenerist Line over the past couple months - thinking I'm going to have to give it a try.

Love your new 'do!

That is interesting. I have heard "experts" say things like this before on GMA and the Today Show. Who knows what the real truth is? That is so great that your derm complimented your lash growth!! I bet you convinced at least one nurse to start using latisse ;)

I am a firm believer in this and I love reading about skincare! There are fashion victims and then there are cosmetics victims. The only Doctors (certain derms and plastic surgeons) that would tell you otherwise are selling the pricey products out of their office themselves. Gee...I wonder why they tell their patients that their products are better--they are profiting!
I think that skin care is simple--stay out of the sun. Period. A $400 jar of beautifully packaged Creme de la Mer cannot reverse the fact that someone layed under tanning beds for 10 years.
I use Olay Regenerist, an Olay eye cream, an Olay sensitive skin moisturizing lotion, and have another lotion with SPF if I'm going to be outside at all. :)

I am skin care obsessed too. And I have to say, I feel like you get what you pay for. All the cheap skin care products I have used? Don't work. For me, that's the end of the story.

Very interesting, and I totally believe it. I've bought some really expensive products, and they haven't done anything for me, but some of the cheaper ones have been awesome!!
