Every fall I start to scan coats for ones that I like. I like to purchase 3 to 4 coats a year. Let me explain ...
1) You need a GOOD warm coat that is also stylish. This is where the Milly Ruffled Darling coat comes in- it's trendy yet not too trendy and still keeps you warm.

Milly Ruffled Darling Coat $565.00
As Rachel Zoe says, in a parallel universe (aka if you don't want to spend a month's rent on a coat) here is a more affordable option:
J.Crew Wool Ribbon Script Coat $275.00
2) You need a SHORTER coat that you can just throw on with a turtleneck for easy access and easy wearing. This year for me that would be the Bensoni coat I scored on www.gilt.com (see my sidebar for an invite):
Bensoni Bianca Button Jacket $595.00 ($198.00 via gilt.com)
For a more affordable option, try this:
Gap Tweed Military Jacket $98.00
3) You need a straight-up down jacket for days when it's absolutely freezing! This is where my North Face Puffer Ski Jacket comes in:
Northface Down Jacket $199.00
For a more affordable option, try this:
Gap Puffer Jacket $98.00
4) And last but not least, a nonsensical FUN jacket!!!
Juicy Couture Cropped Fur Jacket $398.00
For a more affordable option, try this:
Forever 21 Leopard Jacket $27.00
Happy Shopping!

LOVE! You are so right on needing a few choices. Unfortunately, Houston doesn't allow for a lot of jacket moments :( But I still think I need a new one...or maybe 2!
Great picks, I love them all! And it looks like Gap has some really cute ones. Once mid November hits here I am usually stuck with the North Face though!
Very cute! I like how you included all the different price points. :)
Love them all...I really like the Gap one...I didn't know that they had any cute options. :)
Omigosh the Milly coat is to die for! I want!
Very nice selection! I think you should also include some trench coat options. That's all I wore when I lived in SF - lived for my burberry and Coach trenches!
Or if you're me, just skip the coat all together cause it's hotter than love outside all year long and just wear a bikini instead! hahaha
Oh how I miss coats! These all look FABULOUS!!!
I'm looooving that Milly jacket. I have the same North Face- in Chicago that jacket gets tons of use!
The coat closet in our foyer is full to overflowing with MY coats ... no enough room for everyone else's. Coats and jackets are my absolute favorite type of clothing.
I've been eyeing that Milly coat for a while now. Absolutely stunning!!!
Yes, we all NEED many, many choices when it comes to coats! Now I have to hunt down that Milly. You, you, ENABLER! Love being enabled to spend $!
For the past couple of years, I have really been on a coat kick, so I loved this post!
That Milly is my favorite and probably the only neutral color that I do not have. I just love the cut of it, and of course, the ruffles!
I so wish I had a need for these beautiful coats. Unfortunately, I rarely get to wear the coats I already own. Because I need a coat approximately 3 days a year, it just doesn't make sense to spend money on them. Instead, I spend money traveling to places where I might need to wear the coats I already own. :) Luckily, they're mostly J.Crew classics I can wear year after year. Enjoy your cold weather and gorgeous coats!
I love your picks! That Milly Ruffle Coat is amazing!
The puffer coat tends to be the coat of choice in this place, so cold, but oh I love these others!
I love the Milly coat and very impressed with what Gap has out right now as far at their fall/winter clothes.
Love all the coats too cute.
I tagged you for an award on my page.
Have a good weekend.

Ooooh, you found some luscious ones Miss Megan, there are too many of them we love to enumerate! What a tempting list you have created! (We would probably put that Milly near the top of the list tho'!)
May your weekend be wonderful!

I'm loving the jacket you posted from gilt!
