It created almost an "ombre" effect on her hair. Back then, we all just thought she was being grungy and letting her natural hair grow out, but this has turned into a full on trend in 2010. After discussing it with D.O.N. over at Day Old News (who lives in L.A. and assures me that every stylist there is raving about the new ombre hair trend) we have concluded that this is, in fact, a full-on hair trend.
Lauren Conrad has recently embraced the trend with some blonde hair extensions underneath her light brown hair:
Perhaps she is copying her old pal Whitney Port?
Sienna Miller seems to be pulling an ombre herself:
And Cameron Diaz did this a while ago:

What do you all think of the Ombre/Two-tone hair color trend? Personally, I am too high-maintenance with my hair color to embrace this trend (I can't get past the feeling of "skank roots"), but I have to say it doesn't look as bad as one would think.

It's pretty, but I can see how it could look a little grungy if you don't have a professional stylist making it look shiny and flawless. I hated it on SATC but am liking it more now, esp. on LC.
i don't mind it. i don't love it either. i agree that having a celeb stylist would help keep it from looking like skanky roots. are you still planning on going brown? i can't wait to see pics!
I think that SJP could really pull this look off, but I'm not sure that regular old me it wouldn't just look tired.
I just had my hair colored like this ("ombre" effect)--check out my blog for pictures--I LOVE IT!!!

Im with you on this, I too am too high maintence with my hair. My hair stylist tells me 6-8 weeks, I go every 6 weeks. I hate roots.
Lauren Conrad's hair looks beautiful! If everyone growing out their roots had hair that looked like that, I'd totally be for it. Unfortunately, so few do. I agree with you, I'm much too crazy about my hair to let it happen.
Maybe its just me, but there is no way i could wear this look and still consider myself professional. It's fine for celebs, but not okay for work for me. I guess I'm high maintenance
i don't like it. well, i think cameron's looks ok, but LC's is too high contrast. looks like she dipped her ends in bleach.
I hate this look. It drives me batty. Everytime I see someone with the two tone hair I want to dye their hair for them.
It looks good on some people, but I agree that only a stylist could keep this look up. I doubt seriously that even stars hair looks that good ALL the time like this!
Since I am a huge supporter of natural hair color, I am okay with this! Get the hair dye out :) I don't dye my hair or highlight it, so I am one of the few people you see with very dark, almost black hair and very pale skin (I use an umbrella) and it's natural, not that nasty fake, emo black.
It's much more tolerable on these celebs because of their access to the best stylists, and there ability to blend the two tones, just growing out your color would look a lot more pepe la pew!
I don't think I like it...I'm still a fan of the clean and fresh look, so the "ombre" hair looks a little dirty to me!
I have to admit that I have always liked this style, as long as the two colors aren't TOO different.
I first noticed it several years ago when Gisele Bundchen came on the scene--she always had that grown-out highlights look and I always wanted her hair!
I'm not a fan. I do agree that if you had a stylist 24/7, it could be kept up but for a "normal" person, I don't think it's very practical! It does look better on curly hair as opposed to straight though..
My roots make me crazy, so yeah, I don't think I could do it. But on some people it looks just fine.
I agree - it looks like they forgot to get their highlights done. But otherwise, not as bad as I would have thought. Still, I think I'll keep my appointment to get my highlights touched up this weekend. :)
It's very popular out in Los Angeles. I had a similar look 2 years ago, but quickly switched it up because I felt like I had nasty roots! I do want to go back darker again. Kind of over being blond.
I think it looks nice depending on how far the 2 colors are away from each other. If they blend well it doesn't look too bad!! I personally have to have my hair dye touched up every couple of weeks. I can't stand when it starts to fade. Me = hair dyeaholic.
iam totally with you! Now way I could stayed it! but hey all those ladies are beauties so who knows- I guess they can just pull it off
It actually looks far more natural and much softer than uniform color root to end. I personally hate the over colored, uniform look. The longer your hair is on your head, the more affected by the sun it will be ( especially on anyone with hair longer than collar bone length). That is why the "ombre color" is more natural looking than fake blonde new growth. Of course the color graduation should not be too drastic though.
yeah it looks a little grungy but I am normally too busy to get mine done on time and it starts to look like that lol ooops, good thing its a new trend!
I think everyone pulls it off except LC. But for me I couldn't do it. I'm too high maintenance.
i'm growing mine out right now and have almost 2 inches of natural growth. i don't know if i'll have the patience to keep going though. might break down and get it rehighlighted...
I think it works for blondes, because blonde hair is naturally several tones given the season, but it still looks kinda grungy on brunettes.
