PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Hair Color SOS

Hair Color SOS

For the past few months I have just been trying to get back to my natural hair color. Why is it so hard?

Perhaps some of you all have shared this similar struggle. Initially my hair was dyed too dark and my roots started growing in lighter. After trying to go a little lighter, my roots then turned more blonde than the rest of my hair. Also, my hair got a red-ish tint which I do NOT like at all.

Why is it so hard to get your natural color right? My natural color is a dark blonde/very light brown. I know it would be best to just let it grow out, but I can't handle the contrast of the colors.

My natural color is probably that of SJP or Jennifer Aniston:

And it's currently a lot darker and more red than that (in these beach pics I was shocked at how red my hair looks):

Have any of you all had this similar struggle? Do you have any suggestions?

Oh yes I had a similar struggle. I use a color mousse now and it reduces the redness on my hair and helps me in between salon visits, it´s perfect. Maybe you just need a color care product that will help your hair color last longer. I wouldn´t order it online but buy it at a salon so you would be sure to get the right product for your hair. Good luck! xx

Yes, I struggle with it all of the time. I try to color my own hair, then it goes red on me, then get highlights for the summer and everyone loves it, then I try to go darker in the fall and it turns like ten different colors. So frustrating. I've had it dyed to match my natural color and grew it out and that worked, but then I ended up not liking my natural color again! I think it's just a result of me never being satisfied with my looks!! I would love to have JA's color - always refer to her hair as the perfect color.

I started coloring my hair when I was 14. What was my mother thinking? Anyways, I've tried everything and now I want something low maintenance......ugh!I can't get back to my natural brown. Right now I am a dark dark brown and I like it. As long as there is no red, I am happy. Good luck on your quest!

As a hairdresser, here are my thoughts...in order to cut out the red, you have to add an ash color to your base. I hate to tell you this but it has to be at least one shade darker to cut out the red. Once that is done, then I would add some subtle highlights to lighten it up. It may not be where you want it this time, but next time it should be pretty close. Once it gets close to your natural color then let it grow out. There are also sheer colors that you can use that last about 3 weeks. The Paul Mitchell version is called PM Shine. I do this once a month and LOVE IT! They are so healthy for your hair and make it shine while adding a sheer color. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Too bad you don't live in Louisville or I would just do it for you:)

Have a great day and best of luck:)

Maybe a toner would take away some of the red and even out the roots?

I think the color looks great on you though!

The hairdresser commenter (Jennifer) was right on the money. You need to add less warmth (and some ashiness). Then get highlights...

Yup, Jennifer's comment nailed it! Itsn going to take some serious work to get that red out!!

I did the same thing to my hair, it was really blonde, then I went dark (too dark) and I'm trying to get it back to normal. The bad thing is, you just have to be patient and do it in stages, as Jennifer said. It's really frustrating but if you don't do it right, its sooo much worse.

When I was growing my highlights out I used that temporary color (6-12 shampoos) and color it every month or so at home. It covered my roots without permanently dying everything else. Eventually when the highlights grew out, I let the color fade leaving my natural color behind.

Good luck!

My hair is naturally the same exact color and once you change it, its impossible to go back! It doesnt come in a bottle. I have had my stylist do color glazes that lighten gradually and it looks much more natural.

I am in the process of getting back to my natural color. It takes so long. ugh. I use a color gloss (or glaze) to help hide the obvious two toned look I have going on without it.

My hair pretty much does what it wants. It doesn't hold color at all, if I get highlights they get ridiculously blond in days and whatever color you attempt to dye my hair, it will go the opposite way. So I gave up and just let it grown out. I now have kind of dark roots with lighter hair halfway down which somehow because okay as the celebs are rocking that look right now. So thanks SJP for letting your roots grow out!

YES! oh my gosh, my hair is naturally close to jennifer aniston's, with a red tint. anyways, it's always been such a struggle to get the blonde without at least a little red tint, no matter what my stylist does. when i go a little darker, it does the same thing. one thing i found that helps is using purple shampoo. any brand, as long as it's purple. it helps neutralize the brassiness. :) good luck!

It's fascinating how many people have the same struggle, you would think it would be an easier problem to fix, on your own or at a salon, but it isn't.

We like the way your pictures have looked Miss Megan, but realize you aren't thrilled with it. :(

Sending you wishes you are able to get it where you want it to be!

I also have light brown/dark blond hair. I stopped lightening my hair in college and pretty much did the same thing Jennifer suggests to get back to my original colour. I would say that it isn't going to look perfect until it has grown out but at least it will be much healthier in the end. Good luck!

I missed my highlight appointment and am now struggling with seriously drastic ombre going on. SO NOT CUTE but I have to just hide from the mirror until I get closer to the wedding I'm in.

My hair does the same thing with the red tint and my hairdresser suggested using a special shampoo that will dull out the red. It's called Shimmer Lights and you can get it at Sally's Beauty, works magic on mine! Leave it in for a few minutes while you shower and then rinse out. Something in the purple turns the red into a more blonde tint. Good luck!
