PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: OTK- the down low

OTK- the down low

Recently I received an email from a reader that made me LOL:

Hi Megan,
I read your blog and love your style. You should do a post on over the knee boots. I really want to get some, but I'm afraid of looking too "Pretty Woman." haha. Thoughts?!

Well, funny you should ask, because I have several opinions on the ever-so-popular OTK (or over-the-knee) boots.

Here's the bottom line, wear em proud, but don't wear them with skanky clothes. Yes, I said it, but if you want to avoid looking like a street walker, let's keep it PG-13 with the clothes you choose to wear with OTK boots.

I actually love them, I really do. I recently purchased a pair at Target (gasp!) that look very similar to a pair that were almost 900 dollars that I had my eye on. My reasoning is this: while I do love the trend, I don't foresee it being around for too long, hence why it might be smart to buy the cheaper versions. Knee boots will ALWAYS be in style. I just don't know about the OTK ones, and I could be wrong, but I will be playing it safe with cheaper variations of the couture styles.

Here is the Target pair that I purchased this past weekend. They are the 'karianne' style and can be found here.

Here is an example of how NOT to dress with OTK boots:

And an example of how TO dress with OTK boots:

Just keep it simple. Wear them over jeans or leggings. Don't wear them bare legged with a tunic. No need for fishnets or hot pants whilst wearing the thigh-highs.

Great post! I struggle with OTK boots because I am short. Most shafts are 22", which comes up way too high on my thighs. I just ordered the BR OTK boots because (a) they were not as pricey as some others (i.e. LR boots) and (b) the shaft height is only 18".

Also, there is a great shoe place in NYC (Leather Spa) that can help perfectly fit your OTK boots (i.e. stretch, slim down, etc). They also do an amazing job resoling Louboutins. Here is their website:

Hi, Great post. I have been contemplating the OTK trend myself. Thanks for the Do's and Don'ts!

Agreed... I'm not a fan though unless they are spot on perfect with an outfit and the person has the legs to pull them off... not sure I'll be wearing these like ever... I like my shoes on my feet and not extending to my thighs... just the way I am...

I love Kate Hudson's. If I had long skinny legs, then yes I would consider but I don't think they'd do much for my figure:)

This post made me LOL. I normally don't care too much for the OTK boots, since usually people wearing them look too "Pretty Woman," indeed. But the last picture with Kate Hudson made me swoon! Perhaps because they weren't in black, perhaps because I'm OBSESSED with her fluffy peacoat/sweater, or perhaps because the entire look is definitely something I would wear. Any chance you know anything about her coat? lol Anyway, thanks for another interesting post! Love it!

I LOVE the brown ones Kate is wearing in the last photo. Brown is so unexpected (and so far from Pretty Woman). Love this post!!

Great post! Definitely the over the knee boot has to be balanced out with a fitted jean, and a loose fitting or layered top/jacket/scarf. And a lower heal makes the look way more tame!

Love this! My riding boots are so comfy and I'll rock those every winter, but the OTK's that I've been seeing everywhere mix btw tasteful and you know what...great find at Target!
