PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Jean Help!

Jean Help!

Last night, I got this question and think it's time we talking about some JEANS!

Hey Megan!

I'm trying to find the perfect pair of jeans and I need some help. All of my jeans are too big now and they stretch/fade (yes, cheapie jeans).

Here's what I'm looking for: DARK DARK DARK (not black) something versatile to wear with my Revas and sandals, and quality (little to no stretching or fading). I like very clean lines and pockets. I'm a little self-conscious about my hips and thighs and I look RIDICULOUS in skinny jeans (no, really).

If you would like to use this for your blog, feel free!

Thank you!

Lindsay

Not sure if most of you know this, but I worked in a high-end women's contemporary boutique for two years before I started my current job. We also carried designer denim and I definitely learned my Jeans 101 while working there!

It sounds like Lindsay wants something that is either a straight or skinny leg since she wants to wear them with flats, but it also sounds like she might not like that particular style since she says that she is self-concious about her hips and thighs!

One of the main things I learned while working in the boutique is that women are VERY SCARED of skinny jeans and/or jeggings. Time and time again I would try to get someone to try them on and they would shudder with fear when they actually had the skinny jeans on. It really does take a lot of getting used to with skinny jeans. Personally, for me, this is my favorite style of jean simply because I love the look. I do admit that it's not for everyone.

Jeggings are my absolute favorite because not only are they skinny, but they have the feel of leggings and they are SOFT and comfy to wear! However, I am very petite and I do realize that jeggings are not for everyone!

Do not fear! There are "straight" options for those of you who want the skinny look, but don't necessarily want something that is pasted on to your leg. The straight leg is going to have a larger opening than say a skinny that is pretty much an ankle jean.

Also, this year especially, bell-bottom jeans are making a comeback! Think 70's hippie jeans. This is a tricky style to wear though because you can't necessarily wear flats with these jeans. They really look best with the HUGE chunky heels or wedges, and I don't know about you, but those aren't my favorite styles of shoes to wear.

And when all else fails, you can't go wrong with the standard bootcut jean. If you get these altered to the perfect length, they can be the most flattering jean ever!

With denim- don't skimp on price and alterations! These are meant to last and if you tailor them just right, they can give you the look that is flawless!

I hope I've given Lindsay some options and given you all a little jean help :)

In case she's reading these comments, Lauren Conrad's Style book has a lot of tips for keeping jeans from fading and stretching. From what I remember, if they have any stretch, buy them as tight as possible cause they'll get bigger. Also, wash them inside out to keep them from fading too much and don't wash them too often. There's also a company that repairs jeans and dyes them back to original colors I think... forgot what they're called. Sure she can google. Great post Meg!

It took me FOREVER to find jeans I loved. When I finally found them I was beyond excited. I love Citizen of Humanity jeans. They just fit me perfectly! I used to spend tons on them at department stores, but now I look for them on eBay. Plus, most of the time they are already hemmed to the length I need. Double win!

For a less expensive option Banana Republic Skinny jeans and Ultimate Skinny have the perfect amount of stretch in them and are a great dark wash. I got mine on sale for $54, I think normally they are $70? Love them!

I have hips and thighs too, so I'm always on the search for the perfect pair of jeans. I've tried and purchased tons over the years! I highly recommended trying Hudson jeans. I have them in tons of washes and different lengths. Boot cut is a good basic of theirs to have. They also seem to fit my smaller waist better than others (there's not a huge gap like with some other brands).

I used to feel the same way about skinny jeans until I tried the Super Stretch Skinnys by Henry & Belle - they have a great dark wash and are extremely comfy (they suck you in but you can still eat!). They also fit my waist which is great.

Also check out AG jeans - I have a pair of Angel jeans that fit great. I've also heard that Joes work well with this body type, but I've found that I prefer the ones I just mentioned.

Another tip is to make sure you're wearing the right size - I've always been self conscious about my thighs so I tended to go bigger, but I learned a few years ago that I should have been wearing jeans two sizes smaller! All jeans are going to stretch/give a little with wear, especially the more comfortable ones, but that is easily fixed with a wash. A knowledgeable salesperson should be able to tell you which ones stretch more so you can get the right sizing.

I don't think I could survive without my J. Brand skinnys. I recently purchased the crop version and I love, love, love them.
