PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: S.A.D?

S.A.D?

This is the post in which I go all Carrie Bradshaw on you. It seems this time of the year always brings about sadness and reflection for me. It's cloudy everyday, cold, and dark. Sometimes I think I have S.A.D. or "Seasonal Affective Disorder" where one literally gets sad in the winter months.

I can't help but think about how much I miss home, miss my family & friends, miss living in a certain city that I lived in before. It's this time every year when I long for a trip to the caribbean or somewhere like Las Vegas.

It's this time every year when I think about year's past and things I used to do and friends that used to be in my every day life that I am now forced to email, text, and call instead of seeing their faces every day in real life.

I know this is just a phase and I will be my normal chirpy self in a couple of months, but it's funny how this happens to me every year at the same time.

I have to remind myself to live in the present and stop thinking about where I used to live, what I used to do, what friends I used to see all the time.

Do you all get the SADS this time of year?

I totally get this! I think mine mainly manifests when I'm not busy enough. At least you have work to keep you busy. I dragged the husband to Atlanta last weekend and it was just the cure for my blues. Hope you feel better!

I used to get this really bad living in NY, with the dark gloomy days and lack of sunshine and warmth and just feeling stuck inside! Being in Texas this winter, I am lucky to have fresh air and sunshine and the ability to go outside for a walk instead of hitting the treadmill! Hope you see some sunshine soon! Love your blog!

I don't really get the blues from the weather... I do get the blues from drinking though! Really strange feelings - but after only 2 nights of drinking (on the weekend) I am always depressed on Sundays.

So I saw on twitter that you've been watching SATC reruns--I live in CA where it's mostly sunny, so I can't so much relate to your winter blues--- BUT I have to tell you that I get sad every time I watch more than a few SATC reruns. I get sad for the days when I lived in san diego (miss it so much) with all my gfs and went out all the time and had nothing better to do than go to the gym and have parties with all my friends. I love, love being married and I'm so thankful to have had those days (a lot of girls never experience that) but seeing Carrie and the gang in all of their girlfriend glory-makes me really, really miss it more than usual.

also-since you are now totally aware that this is seasonal-you should def plan a vegas trip for this time next year. something to look forward to. I can't believe you have never been. It's in my top 5 fav cities!

Hey Megan,

Not sure where you live, but I live in Chicago. I'm originally from Alabama so I'm totally not used to the winters up here.

I actually bought a Phillips GoLite (S.a.d. light) for about $90 on ebay. Best purchase ever. I use the light in the mornings when I do my hair/make-up. I call it the "Crack light" because it gives me so much energy!

Here's a link to my blog where I wrote a detailed review...

Oh girl I totally get S.A.D. If it is rainy I'm in a funk and depressed and hate everything from my outfit to whatever I'm doing. I get super depressed. But when it's sunny and beautiful outside I'm literally IN LOVE with life. When I get down I just have to remind myself that the next day will be beautiful. It's a weird thing. Maybe I would do better living in AZ where it hardly ever rains!.

I don't know if I get SAD (because I live in always sunny So Cal!), but I really miss living in a city where I have a "history." My husband does, but I don't. And it gets old. And yeah, I get really really tired of texting/emailing/calling my close friends. It's not very fun.

I totally get S.A.D. It took me years to realize what the problem was. I get so depressed in the winter months and when the first good week of warm weather and sunshine comes, it's like I come alive again. It seems like I just don't have the energy in the winter either. My house is always messier but I can't really account for where a lot of my time goes since I seem to sit around more.

This happens to me every winter as well. I'm ok until Christmas and then it's all downhill until April when it gets warm again. March is even bad here bc all of the summer stuff is out in stores and it's sunny but it's still SO cold here in VA.
Sometimes I do go on anti-anxiety meds this time of year. SAD is real, and I hope once my little one gets bigger we start planning a family vacay every February - to somewhere warm.
Before blogging I thought my mom and I were alone in this. Definitely not!

get yourself a bottle of vitamin D. Don't wait until spring - you'll feel better within a few days.

Yep, every February like clock-work. I think it's coming down from all the fun of the holidays.

I'm actually learning about this in Anatomy. And it can be treated by phototherapy... whatever that is! But I totally understand, and am in the same funk! The thing that helps me most is taking a long hot bath and just crying it out, or calling my sweet mama.

I'm a little late in commenting, but go to the tanning bed. I know, I know... but just 5 minutes every couple of days won't hurt or burn you and will give you a tiny boost. My psychiatrist friend recommends this to all her seasonal depressive disorder clients.
