PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Clothing Conundrum

Clothing Conundrum

This weekend I went out to eat with a friend and wore an H&M dress, Theory jacket, Hermes scarf, and Report booties.  I actually hated this outfit and attempted to change about 5 times before leaving.

Herein lies the problem- I hate all of my clothes.  I know, that's so stupid for someone to say, especially someone that loves clothes.  But I really hate all of my clothes right now.  Do you all go through phases like this?

I feel like I have tons of fluff clothes.  I have an insane amount of dresses.  I have hardly any blouses and basic sweaters.  Somedays I just want to throw on some jeggings and an oversized sweater but the only ones I have are long enough to be dresses, so it looks weird.  It's almost February, so is it too late to buy a bunch of basic sweaters now?  Probably so.

In my outfit rage the other night I went digging for a basic sweater to wear with some leather leggings and couldn't find anything without a cat or hen on it.  At that moment I thought, "WHY DID YOU BUY A SWEATER WITH A HEN ON IT?!?!"

I remember being at Nordstrom Rack last year and seeing a bunch of T by Alexander Wang oversized t-shirts and sweaters and wanting to buy them, but for some reason I talked myself out of them because they were "too plain" to be that expensive.  I now wish I would have just bought them all to have some basic stuff to wear.
Top: 1, 2, 3, 4
Bottom: 1, 2, 3, 4

So I guess there was really no point to this rant except to say that I wish I had more basic items in my wardrobe and less animal sweaters and silk dressy dresses.

Do you all ever feel like this?

Story of my life. There are days when I have too many choices and days I have no choices what-so-ever all within the same closet.

Omg story of my life! I go through the same thing....I hate all of my clothes and can find nothing to wear in a huge closet full of clothes! I often try to find a basic sweater to throw on and can't. I too am on the hunt to stock up on basics again. Happy hunting!

Go through the same stage at least once a year lol. I make a point now to invest in few plain key pieces. Found a lot of great Vince and Joie tops in TJ Maxx. If you are really craving some plain things, I would just get a few light sweaters and T's that way you can transition into spring/summer. For leggings, the best ones I find to be are by David Lerner and Lulu lemon ( some are great for going out). P.S. Love the scarf!! You are causing me to go to Hermes, hope they have colorful scarfs for Summer!

I go through the same phase all the time. I have too many dresses, pointy toe heels and pencil skirt. Not enough pants, jeans or functional shoes.

Guess what when I go shopping...I buy dresses again :/

First thing, I think your outfit looks super cute! But I will say that I totally go through stages like this and it's normally in Feb-March, when I start getting sick of my winter clothes and need more transitional pieces. I realized I have too many dresses the other day too though when I just wanted a comfy weekend outfit and couldn't really figure out what to wear. Such a girl problem--too many clothes and nothing to wear.

I am so glad you made the comment about animal sweaters. I am only recently back in a fashion frame of mind, having devoted the last four years to decorating my house. So recent, in fact, that I missed all of the adorable animal sweaters offered by J.Crew, among others, over the fall and winter. I have been eying chicken, dog and fox sweaters on eBay, and wondering whether I should buy one or two, even though they are priced higher than retail, because they are sold out. You have brought me back to my senses, and I will forbear from the temptation to indulge in over-priced cuteness, at least until I have a decent collection of basics.

Felt like this every single day until my husband had a stylist come work with me. I was at first insulted that he thought I needed a stylist, then mad that it was so expensive, then infuriated that I had nothing to wear to meet her.

She came to my house, got me to try on everything I owned and went over why clothes did not work for me and why some did. I got rid of 9 Industrial Drum Liner size garbage bags full of clothes (!) and left me with an incredibly detailed list of clothes I needed to buy for my shape/size/style.

I now have a comparatively tiny wardrobe of quality things and never feel like I have nothing to wear. I almost have a uniform of Vince shirts and skinny jeans!

I think the key is to get pieces that are versatile to go with everything in your wardrobe and then build out the fun stuff around it. I love leopard print, so I bought shoes and a scarf to balance it out.

Just my thoughts :)

I think this is just a girl problem. The things that make me giddy (i.e. 7 different colors of skinny jeans, sequin tops, flirty dresses) just aren't the things that I actually want to wear day to day. Stocking up on boring basics is at the top of my spring shopping list, and as un-sexy as that sounds, I am actually pumped about it!

STORY OF MY LIFE!!!! I am a clothes whore and yet I somehow always go through that phase of hating my clothes (and it seems to always come during that time of the month..... coincidence?!?)

I need to start writing down what I "need" when I am in my closet and thinking "I need this" that way when I am out I can be on the lookout!

I think now might be a good time to buy sweaters and basics... so many places want them out so they can bring spring stuff in- there may be good sales!

I've never had an alexander wang top but I think there's a reason everyone is obsessed with those tees.

BTW, loving those boots on you!

I totally had the same feelings this weekend when I was trying to get dressed for a casual dinner with friends. Kills me. If you find some great basics that are worth investing in, let us know.

I feel like that all of the time. Sometimes you need a couple of new things to make you see it all in a different light? I think when in doubt, the solution is to go shopping!

Every day this week. I have tried on about 10 things before leaving in something I hate every day. I am mentally ready for Spring and sundresses.

Same here. I feel ya sister! I have "dressy" dresses and yoga clothes. That's it. I don't have a lot of cute clothes that look pulled together, but don't scream "I'm trying too hard". My style crushes, Olivia Palermo and Miranda Kerr always look effortless, yet casual.

I love the outfit! Hermes scarves make everything better. I throw one on when I feel like I hate my look. I always say I hate my clothes. I go through phases when I just cannot seem to put something cute together to save my life. I think now is the best time to buy sweaters etc. bc they are on sale lol

I love that outfit! But definitely feel this way ALL THE TIME.!. I am spontaneous when I buy clothes so the amount of things that sit in my closet unworn is embarrassing. I like Emily's idea, write down what "basics" we are always looking for when we get ready!

You may have too many clothes. This makes it hard to pick something and then you may end up frustrated. I had that problem for years. Then I lost a lot of weight and had to start over. Now that I do not have that many things it is easier.
