PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Trip Down Memory Lane ...

Trip Down Memory Lane ...

Yesterday I was feeling very nostalgic. I started thinking about all of the crazy trends that were "cool" when I was in middle school/early high school. Let's take a little trip down memory lane and let me know if any of these trends were "cool" at your school.

First of all, you weren't cool in middle school unless you had a pair of these puppies:

Yes, these hideous Timberland boots were all the rage.

And I used to wear them with these sweet Calvin Klein denim overalls:

Another hot item? These awful Steve Madden slides. You definitely had a pair, right? They made an awful clunking noise while walking.

Speaking of slides, the Esprit and Adidas slides were POPULAR:

Remember these awful Doc Marten chunky sandals with the clear bottom? Gross.

And perhaps the most popular item from middle school/high school- the Kate Spade nylon backpack and square purse.

What were some ugly trends that you remember?

Oh geez- I had those Doc Martens you posted, both in dark brown and a light green shade. Ugh, so awful (and they were SO HEAVY!).

Anne said...

TOTALLY remember all of that. Blech. How did we all think that was so cool??

Kat said...

Oh I remember those! I also remember everyone owned these Sketchers white sneaker type shoes. Yikes!

Blue-Eyed Bride said...

I had all of those things. I still use my Kate Spade nylon messenger when I go to Market in ATL with my mom. Haha.... I guess I didn't know it was so ugly! :)

Love this post- had all of this, but terrrifyingly it was late high school for me (I'm 28).

Oh my goodness! I thought my school was the only one where those Timberlands were cool, good god, everyone had a pair and they're so ugly! I used to wear them with Old Navy jeans--ick! As well as those black slides, haha what were we thinking!?

Oh! And leopard print pants, those were super cool in the 8th grade.

Ha! I seriously had 4 out of the 6 of those bad boys... I was so in love with that Kate Spade bag that my hubby gifted it to me when we were engaged in '02. I still have it, mostly for nostalgic purposes, but the rest of those gems I once owned, their final resting place was the trash can. :)

I think I had every single one of those - but it was college time for me. Horrible.

Tez said...

Sadly, I remember all those and did sport some of them. Another trend I remember from Middle/High School was everyone wore Umbro shorts and the guys wore Teva sandals. Another horrific mistake we made were the World Wildlife Fund t-shirts. Those old school Dooney & Bourke purses were the hot item at my school too.

Christine said...

OMG! You totally had to go to my middle school! I didn't know these were nationwide trends! The Steve Madden shoes were my fave!

I totally had every single one of these things! Totally forgot about the Esprit or Adidas sandals - I hated those sandals because those little bubble things HURT! This list is hilarious, thanks for the laugh!

LOL!!! This is an awesome post!!!! I wore all of this stuff except the Doc's (I hated them then as much as I do now) and the Kate Spade bags. Our popular bookbag was Jansport. I still have my green Adidas flops!! Love them. LOL Thanks for the trip back in time!!

Lynn said...

Oh wow. I owned all of these items in junior high. Adidas track suits were also "cool" at my school and I had one with the swishy material w/ the 3 stripes going down the sides of the sleeves and pants. AWFUL!

Buckhead Belle said...

Haha, totally remember all those sweet trends. What were we all thinking?

Randall @ Happy For This Moment said...

Goodness, I had all of that! Too funny...

Unknown said...

Great post! I totally owned each of those (save for the timberlands, that didn't catch on in San Antonio). Another "must have" for the 90s was those Dooney & Burke totes with the duck http://www.horsekeeping.com/Dooney/MISC/bucket160-front.jpg all the cool girls had them. I had just moved from DC to Texas and I thought they were lame.

Sarah said...

Oh my god! I TOTALLY had every single one of those!!! They were a MUST in my closet!! Too funny :)

Jamie said...

oh.my.gosh. I was a victim of lots of those trends...Timberlands, overalls, and Adidas sandals! What was I thinking? I also remember that in middle school the girls would wear tube socks and scrunch them down. Looking back at pictures it looks so silly!

Ashley Turner said...

I definitely had those Steve Madden Slides which I think probably permanently damaged my feet. They are NOT real shoes and would never stay on! YUCK!

Rember denim vests over floral dresses? ICK! Or how about school sweat shirts with untucked white oxfords underneath worn with Khaki's! Ew! Painful times indeed!

e. said...

so sad but i totally wore all of those things!

Mere said...

How funny! Overalls--check. Steve Madden Chunky shoes--check. Doc Marten Sandals--check. What was wrong with us lol.

At least I'm skinny said...

I still wear those Timberlands in the winter! Even my dad said something about them being from high school. I just can't let them go!

Tiffany said...

OMG, I had so many of these items! I had Guess? overalls that were adorable, until one of the dudes in my class picked me up by the back of them to give me a wedgie and ripped the buttons off the side.

My favorite from my kid days were koolauts (sp?). I had a pair in every color, I think. Dressy like a skirt, functional like shorts. :)

Sweet Simplicity said...

Unfortunately, I remember all of those things. Except for the boots. Thank goodness, those things were cool in my town. haha.

Kate said...

Replace the Timberlands with the 8-Hole Doc Martin boots and you've just described the trends for me aged 6th through 9th grade!

Megan said...

I remember everything except the Kate Spade bags. I'm not sure if they weren't that popular at my school or if I was just too busy buying 30 pairs of Doc Martens to notice! :-)

Jennifer said...

oh my gosh! middle school flashback happening right now! what was I thinking with those terrible black shoes? and doc martens? yuck!

Julie said...

OMG I had all of those. The awesome Adidas slides. I lived in those EXACT Docs - remember how expensive they were??? I had to beg my mom to let me get them. What were they, $80?

I remember wearing a lot of Gap oversized polo shirts with my Docs. WTF?

Sara said...

LOL!!! The scrunchie, the Dooney, the bodysuits! All, SO awful!

Anonymous said...

The adidas samba soccer shoes?? AH.

Anonymous said...

OMG, guilty as charged with owning just about every Doc Martens sandal and boot style throughout my High School years! Looking back, they made my feet look so big and they were so clunky. What was I thinking?! Ha!

TLF said...

Yuck.. All of the above!
I owned them all.. HAHA!

BelleinBows said...

bahaha, I just died reading this post! What's worse then the Kate Spade nylon bag, I owned it in red and yellow stripes...no lie! Oh! and those addias sandals, I wore them all the time even though they killed my feet, only because it was cool. Funny I do the same thing now, only with heels ahah

All Things Cherish said...

Oh my gosh you nailed it! I completely forgot about the Doc Martens, yick! What were we thinking?

Hallie said...

omg. thank God Timberlands were NOT popular at my school! But those freaking doc martens. LOVED THEM!

living well said...

Oh man, I completely forgot about those Steve Madden slides. Yep, I had a pair. Possibly even two. And I had the closed toe variety that added an extra 2 inches onto my height.

Unknown said...

We must be close in age because I remember ALL those trends. I loved my adidas flip flops. Did you ever wear them with socks? We did and we thought we were "cool". LOL

Sweet Southern Prep said...

Love these flashback finds, and yes, I think all of these were popular trends when I was growing up. How awful!? Seriously, all of them! Haha. But I guess that's the thing about a trend. I wonder what we'll be saying about what we're wearing ten-twenty years down the line. So weird to think about.

living well said...

Oh and Adidas shell toes in all different colors! I never had them (not a sneakers person), but remember them being quite popular.

Anna Dearmon said...

Oh god - I had those Doc Martens sandals. We didn't wear the Timberland boots, we did Doc boots/shoes instead. Equally as yuck. It was super cool to wear those Adidas sandals with really tall socks. Yuck. Accordian headbands and those tiny butterfly hair clippie things were big too.

P*P*P said...

Awww.I'm still a fan of the classic Kate Spade....although I must agree with you on the Steve Madden slides...bleck!

I had every single one of those things. Oh boy!

Sarah said...

AHhahahahahaha! Oh my LORD that trips me out... I had blocked out all of those awful things! We used to wear those SM slides with long black skirts that had slits on each side up to the knee with Gap tees... What were we thinking?! I was right there with ya on all of the other ones too, plus the accordion headbands and butterfly clips that another blogger mentioned...

Perfectly Imperfect said...

oh goodness I had all of those except the Kate Spade bag. Guess that one didn't make it to my small town! I also remember the black suede Nike tennis shoes. Everyone at my school had a pair in middle school.

Anyone else where their overalls with one strap(?) hanging down!? I'm pretty sure Vanilla Ice was rollin in his 5.0 whilst all of these fashion mishaps were adorning my body! Aaah, can't wait to see what we'll say about all our wedge sandals, and super big sunglasses 10 years from now!
