How To: Making Red Dyed Hair (or just dyed hair) Last

One of the main problems that I've run into being a fake redhead is the amount of fading with the hair dye.  I think my hair looks amazing for about 3 weeks and then after that it turns a nasty brownish red faded color that doesn't resemble what it was before.

I think it's proven that red hair fades the fastest, but I also ran into this problem when I went a rich chocolate brown.  I know there are certain tips like washing with cold water and using color safe hair products, but I've found something that has helped me tremendously lately.

(it's hard to keep hair salon fresh!)

The combination of these two hair products has totally revamped my hair color and lucky for you they also cater to other hair colors!

1) Riveting Reds Shampoo- I found this product while perusing Sally's Beauty Supply.  It is relatively cheap ($8.99) and is made with henna, so it really gets in there and pumps up your color.  I also got the corresponding conditioner, but I prefer the Aveda one.

2) Aveda Madder Root Conditioner- I have used almost every one of these Aveda color-specific conditioners in the past, but this one was brought to my attention again by Slynnro.  The madder root comes out RED and I make sure to leave it on for about 3-4 minutes.

Here is a picture of before and after using these products.

(why yes, I am wearing two different North Face puffer vests in one week, what of it?)

Like I said, the brand who makes Riveting Reds also makes Beautiful Browns. Aveda also makes Clove, Black Malva, Blue Malva, and Camomile color depositing conditioners.

What other tips and tricks do you all use to preserve your hair color?

As someone who dyed their hair fake red for 20 year (seriously since 1992!) I have a few tips.

Not wash everyday. Which I find extremely hard to do personally.

Rinse in cold water for as much of the washing as possible. Personally it feels like a torture test to wash in cold water but it will keep the red longer.

Use hair sunscreen if you go out in the sun a lot.

Your red hair is beautiful. Just love the color. Thanks for sharing. I don't dye my hair anymore, but the products certainly will help.

I am also a dyed redhead and am definitely going to try out those products you mentioned. I have been using bumble & bumble's color minded shampoo and it has done a really great job of preserving the color for about 5-6 weeks, but even then a little boost wouldn't hurt! My new color girl also has dyed red hair, and honestly just finding someone who understands the trials of keeping the color true has been a huge asset.

Wow the before and after is super dramatic. Good to know as my plan when I start showing some grey/white hair is to go with my natural red tones and punch them up a bit!

I've used Aveda's beautiful browns but I have to be careful, it stains my hands?!

Does it stain your hands? I've used a similar product that left a weird tint on my hands.

the colors are pretty potent, but they don't stain my hands or tub. not sure why. i've read that they do stain with other people.

I wish I had known this when I was a fake red-head! I finally dyed back to brown but this is good to know!

Love the red on you! I've used the Aveda Camomile before; it's amazing!

I have natural red hair, but have been coloring lately to cover the "few" gray hairs. I will say that I have found that Framesi has the longest lasting color of any of the reds! They last longer than any of the brands any colorist has ever used on me!

Thank you so much for posting this. My hair has been every color under the sun. My coloring is just like yours- fair skin, light eyes, naturally light brownish hair and I HATE when the reddish and warm browns fade to gross so quickly!

I have to say that I was not rooting for you to dye your hair back when you were contemplating red, however you are making a fabulous ginger!! It makes you look like a doll, literally -- a little porcelain doll. I'm loving it!

Thanks for the tip, I have been looking for a way to refresh my hair in between trips to the salon. Do you use the shampoo and conditioner every time you wash your hair or do you use it every 2-3 washes?

I wonder if the Madder Root color depositing stuff would work on my non processed auburn hair? I've been wanting to go redder lately, but I'm too scared to dye it and worry that it would damage my already a bit on the dry side locks. Thoughts?

There is an Aveda institute across the street from me, I think they sell products at a discount so it's worth giving it a shot.
