This is my hair after spending 30 minutes curling it with a curling iron. Flat. No curl. I even used hairspray!!! I never use hairspray and I decided to use it today to hold the curl and this is what I get. What am I doing wrong? I just want curls like this:
I feel like I've asked you all this before, but I am clearly not doing something right because I can't get my hair to hold any curl at all.

hi! you need to use a starch spray first to add some texture to your hair before curling with the iron. i have the same issue because i have fine hair and it wouldn't hold a curl until i used redken's starch spray. spray it sparingly all over your hair from at least a foot away. your hair will feel a bit weird but once the heat hits it it will become soft again while holding the curl. then use a finishing spray like moroccan oil's - it holds the waves while keeping your hair soft and pretty.
i hope that helps! :)

I have naturally curly hair. I think people like SJP can achieve curl like that because it's more close to their natural. I get mine pretty smooth and then recurl to get it to look pretty curly...not crazy curly.
That being said my sister's hair is straight and she has only ever had success with those steam rollers.
Try Got2Be hair powder, it works magic and can hold anything!

What size curling iron are you using? Maybe try a smaller curling iron for more of a curl. Also, I've noticed that when I don't many layers in my hair, it doesn't curl well at all. I just started using Paul Mitchell's Hot Off The Press, a flexible hold-like hairspray heat protectant that you spray on your hair before heat styling. It's not crispy at all, and it really holds the curls!
I used to have a really hard time curling my hair too! I have long, fine, straight hair. If I don't blow dry it or comb it frequently as it air dries, it dries in ugly wave like shapes haha
I use one pump of Aveda foaming mouse and run it through my hair after combing and letting it air dry for a couple of minutes. I scrunch my hair while I'm blow drying and then use a 1/4 inch curing iron (mine is Revlon from Target) and wrap small sections around the outside. I spray half my head with Aveda air control hairspray and then do the other side. You can mix up the shape of the curl by running fingers through it or lightly combing before/after hairspray too. My hair ends up looking fairly similar to SJPs... but not as much body!
I've had long straight-as-a-board hair all my life and curl it A LOT. I live in Texas humidity and it stays only if I use a light spray gel before curling. I use Herbal Essence. I've used several - cheap and expensive and it's the one that works for me. Of course, you'll probably need the hairspray too after you curl. Good luck! :)
Have you tried curling with a flat iron? I find it works much better for me and it's faster and easier. I also always set with a spray when I curl. HTH!
There is nothing more frustrating than wasting all the time curling and have it straighten out right away!!! I hate when that happens. :( I've noticed that my hair holds curl better when it's shorter. Maybe your hair is getting too heavy to hold curl? I either use Moroccan Oil Light or a heat protectant spray before I curl mine (and sometimes use hairspray after). The curls loosen during the day but sometimes I make it home with some curl left in. Good luck!
Pin your curls up after you've used a curling iron. There are lots of tutorials out there on how to do it!
The first commenter is right about SJP though... that hair style is smoothing out her natural texture. I don't think it's possible for somebody with as straight of hair as you have to achieve that.
Super hot curling wand and Chi heat protective spray... That should do it!
Do not use a curling iron. The weight of your hair/length of your hair means you require consistent heat throughout the hair shaft. The NUMI wands all have a unique construction that allows your hair to heat and set with a consistent temp. It's time to upgrade to a wand! Then you will get consistent curls from root to tip. Reach out to NUMI and become a sponsored user. I'm sure they would send you some product! You've got the followers!
Try this - I love it!

I am a former hairstylist and my sister is currently a hairstylist. She just had an Aveda styling class at her salon and she learned that the products you use before drying your hair are everything. A mousse or gel works great. Hairspray really only holds the curl for a little bit and you can't rely on it soley. You may have used something before drying it but maybe you need a little more?? Also the size of the curling iron and length of your hair does matter. You may need a smaller curling iron then gently brush through curls. I have also heard good things about the curling wands. Hope that helps!!
I have naturally pretty straight hair. My hair will look like that if I curl it after I've already straightened it. I have to curl my hair when it has had nothing else done to it.
They used the Babyliss Miracurl on my hair yesterday at the salon--maybe it would work for you....

Have you tried a wand? I have the hot tools one (recently on sale at ulta) and it does the loose waves like SJP! Also try on day 2 (or 3) hair!
I use mousse and a diffuser to dry my hair and give it texture. Then I go over it with a 1 inch curling iron and do tight spiral curls all over my head. Then I let it cool and brush it out and it looks like SJP :)

When I worked for Sephora for years, I had one girl with the longest hair that would NOT hold curl, like, we tried everything. Finally used Living Proof Primer on her hair when wet, blow dried her hair, then used the Sultra wand on it. They have a new 1.5", but we used the 3/4. Her hair was at least as long as yours. Let the curls cool down then comb through (fingers or wide tooth comb). Curls last like 3 days for her. No joke. Good luck!
I find that curling my hair with NO product in it works best. Use a ceramic heat tool ( a flat iron or wand ) not a traditional curling iron. my hair is long and straight-but lots of it- and i've NEVER been able to use a regular iron. once your hair is curled add some spray or smoothing cream and voila--curls for days! I actually use a tapered wand (fat to skinny) and it gives consistent shaped wave/curls because the ends usually fall a bit more than the root. give it a try!
Your hair is too healthy to take curl. Maybe if you did a ton of crazy things to make it unhealthy and frizzy it would take curl better. - from a person with somewhat frizzy hair that is no where as nice as yours. :)
Have you tried a Sultra Bombshell curling wand? They work wonders.
