True Life: My dog is a jealous psycho nutcase

For the last couple of days we have been dog sitting Rob's Mom's Brussels, Max. He is a year and a half, so he has grown out of his puppy stage. Normally when we dog sit him they play fine together and are inseparable. Recently, Miss P has been not just a velcro dog, but a "stuck to you with glue, I'm not leaving you alone even when your using the bathroom" kind of dog. She literally follows me everywhere. She wants to be in my lap constantly. This is all fine with me, but once you put another needy dog in the equation, things get sticky. Max is a velcro griff as well. Yesterday, he got up in my lap and Miss P popped off something fierce. She was barking and growling and yelping to no end. Then when I put Max down she starting playfully attacking him, only to start growling and biting him! This was not playing.

We are getting our rescue dog in two weeks. She is a three year old griffon named Apple. We thought Miss P would be elated to get a new playmate, but now I am thinking that it will take some work. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Also, do you all like the name Apple for a dog? I think it's cute, but we are allowed to change the name if we want. This is the picture the NBGR sent to me of Apple. Glad to know her home conditions now are awful. Notice the ashtray and the cigs on the left. Can dogs be victims of second hand smoke like humans can ?!

Cheese the Chihuahua is very velcro as well, he tends to be such a sweetie with certain dogs that just come and leave, but whenever one is around for a long period of time he puts on his sassy pants and bites and growls. So you are not alone! Haha!

I think Apple is cute!! Plus, if the dog is already 3 it might get majorly confused about a name change!

Miss P is absolutely adorable. It will probably take some time, but I'm sure she'll grow out of the jealousy of Apple. (I like the name Apple too.)

Aside from second-hand smoke, you forgot to mention horrible decorating!

Pets can be quite clingy and protective of their owners- so that is totally normal. Apple is behaving like any dog who loves his owner dearly :) Makes me think of Gwyneth Paltrow's and Chris Martin's baby Apple...

Not sure about getting two dogs to get along, but second hand smoke is just as bad for dogs as it is for humans. A little disturbing.
Apple's a cute name, you could change it though if you wanted.

My dog Lola (german pinscher) is very jealous. Doesn't play with others, doesn't respond to treats. And if I ever got pregnant I fear for that baby.

So I feel you on the jealousy issues.

Congratulations on adopting a dog that needs a home. It will take a while and dedication on your part to get the 2 dogs to feel like a pack, but it will be worth it. Daily long walks will assist greatly in your efforts. If name name "APPLE" has bad associations connected to it you might consider changing it. We adopted a horribly abused toy poodle. It took a whle for him to trust my husband but he came around, AND we changed his name too.....

Please rethink your comment about the "awful life" this rescue is living. I wish all dogs had such an "awful life" to escape from. The people that are fostering her clearly care about animals. They smoke.....not great but that hardly qualifies as some kind of mistreatment to this pup. I volunteer for dog rescues and have seen truly HORRIBLE circumstances that dogs come from. At least Apple is being cared for, fed and loved. She's a lot luckier than most dogs.
