PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Alternatives ...

Alternatives ...

To Diet Coke. I've been drinking the DC for YEARS and just recently over the past few months have decided to *try* to cut it out of my diet. Why? Not that it's bad for me, but because someone showed me pictures of rotting teeth that is caused by the acid in sodas. It really grossed me out, so over the past few months I have been trying to find alternatives to Diet Coke.
I have NEVER liked water. I just don't like it one bit. I would rather go without a drink during a meal than have water.

One of my favorite alternatives are the Crystal Light individual water packets. These are great and easy to mix-up. My favorite flavors are the pomegranate lemonade, raspberry lemonade, and raspberry ice.

Another alternative that I am trying to get into is this Vita-Coco Coconut Water. I'll admit that I don't love it. It has an odd taste. Yes, it's refreshing, but it really has taken some getting used to. I recently tried the one with pineapple and it is a little bit more tolerable.

What are some alternative to soda that you gals like?

I have just started drinking coconut water also and started adding it to my superfood smoothies. If you don't like drinking water it is a great alternative. It takes a litte getting used to but is so hydrating for you. Thanks for the post. Jan

I like the sparkling flavored water that's available. Also I think it's Aquafina that has the lightly flavored waters that aren't sparkling. I'm a big fan of the Crystal Lite packs. I don't buy soda so I splurge on bottled water. My favorite is Smart Water by Glaceau.

I'm always trying alternatives. I like Tazo Iced tea (bottled), Perrier with lime or lemon and flavored Vitamin Water. But another good option is to mix soda water with juice. So you get a little fizzy and a little something good for you (and sugar too!). I'm also trying to nix the soda... so hard! It makes peeps retain water and it's not very good for you! Good luck!

I am huge fan of sparkling mineral water like Pelegrino, Perrier, or La Croix.

I gave up all coke products a few years ago. It was such a miserable process! I developed a love for water over time. I did use a lot of Crystal Light too. I drank a ton of tea to replace it, especially green tea and others with plenty of antioxidants. If I want the carbonation, I'll but the flavored carbonated waters that are out there. I found that buying cute water containers (like Sigg's) make me more apt to bring water with me.

I love ice cold water w/ pellet ice like at Sonic. I find that flavored water leaves me wanting more flavor, so I opt for the plain water. I drink about 1 diet coke a day. I buy cans which I rarely finish in 1 sitting so that has allowed me to cut back.

I get terrible caffeine withdraw headaches, or so I thought. Last time I gave of caffeine, I switched to iced tea to ween myself off. I forgot to drink tea one day and to my surprise - no headache. Diet Dr.Pepper is my vice and I hadn't had one in ages. I drank one last week and realized that I don't miss it a bit. Keep up the good work!

Try Emergen-C packets (I like the tangerine and the raspberry and the pink lemonade!) - they are fizzy, tasty, and chockfull of Vitamin C and electrolytes!

I’m too trying to eliminate soda out of my diet and I’ll tell you, crystal light peach tea is one of my favorites!! :)

try cucumber lemon water -- just slice cucumber and lemon in a pitcher of water. it's delicious. I also love sparkling water with orange juice or a fruit concentrate (especially elderflower syrup).

Crystal light is my favorite! They also have pitcher sized packets which I buy and always keep a cold pitcher in my fridge. Orangina is a sparking orange juice drink that I love too but I can only find it at Publix

I am trying to cut out coke too!! I too use the flavoring to the water... but sometimes I crash and have the coke! ahh, it is too hard to give up!!

Year ago I had a disturbing addiction to my drug of choice...Diet Pepsi. One day I went cold turkey and haven't had any for about 6 years! I'm not a coffee or tea drinker, so I drink about a thousand glasses of water all day, which is BORING. By evening, I've had enough and I am now addicted to Pino Grigio...Oh Well!

I actually regularly order 12 pack box of Vita coco coconut water from amazon but I only drink it after running or during boot camp class (I don't get thirsty during yoga at all). It tastes salty because of the high content of potassium but it hydrates really well :)

Have you tried different brands of water? I HATE Evian and arrowhead but I really like smart water and Dasani.

If you're drinking coke instead of water you're making a big mistake since coke is a diuretic like coffee and it will just make you lose water.

I don't like any artificial flavored drinks- I did like Kombucha until it got pulled off the Whole Foods shelves because of its alcohol content (who could have known? haha)

P.S. iPhone orders got messed up because the number of pre-orders was the highest up-to date (10 times more than iPhone 3Gs). I'm waiting for the white one, it looks like I might not have it until August and my old one picked perfect timing to stop working properly...Ugh

I have been doing the same thing lately and have become completely addicted to Crystal Light and Diet Snapples!

I kicked Diet Coke at the new year, haven't had one in nearly seven months! It's especially hard in the afternoons at work when I need something refreshing that isn't water. I like Mendota Lime Sparkling Water or a glass of unsweetened tea.

gah, just seeing that Vita Coco picture makes me throw up in my mouth a little! TMI? I know, I know. It's SO good for you and I've depserately been trying to get it down. After seeing Julia Roberts and Heidi Klum slurping them down in the magazines a month or so ago, I've been DETERMINED to add them to my daily palate! There's an Acai/Pomegranate one that isn't too bad! But as someone said earlier- they're GREAT in smoothies!!! I'm still indulging in one Coke a day- but I find that most times, I'm just craving the carbonation- So a Perrier with 100% cranberry juice or grape juice mixed in, is a PERFECT alternative for me! Good luck finding another fix! :)

I'm currently obsessed with Vitamin Water Zero. There are lots of flavors, but today I have Mixed Berry (called Go-Go). No calories. Vitamin C (100%), Vitamin B3 (40%), Vitamin B12 (40%), Vitamin B6(40%), Vitamin B5(40%), Vitamin E (10%).

All of the flavors are yummy and each have different vitamin levels. The other flavors are xxx (acai-blueberry-pomegranate), squeezed (lemonade), rise (orange), mega-c (grape-raspberry), recoup (peach-mandarin) and revitalize (green tea).

I love them!

I've been drinking the coconut water also b/c its so hydrating, first I was drinking the vita coco too but then I discovered the C2O which I think is slightly better tasting.

I'm a Dr. Pepper addict and I really like Black Cherry flavored Steaz. Steaz is a sparkling green tea drink, that comes in cute little glass bottles. It has 0 calories, 0 fat, 0 carbs, and 0 sugars. And it has vitamins in it like B6, B12 and C. I don't mean to sound like a company rep, I'm just drinking one right now and reading the bottle.

Ooh...love coconut...that sounds kinda good. I'll bet it's a great mixer:)
Coke Zero takes getting used to, but once you do, it's quite good.

If you love the Crystal Light individual packets, try their new "on the go pure fitness" version - it's the same thing but with all natural flavorings and sweeteners. So yum!

I just tried Vita Coco the other week and I love it! I'm also addicted to La Croix sparkling water and diet snapple haha.

Perrier.
I gave up all soda and switched to this.
I love it with about 4 lemons in it and I swear it does taste better if I drink it with a splash of Cranberry juice in my turvis cup. Silly but, true.

Nicole said...

Ummm, could you please show me that picture of the rotting teeth so it will motivate me to STOP drinking diet coke?!?
I do really love buying cans of seltzer water, pouring it over ice, and adding in a splash of some sort of fruit juice - cranberry, pom, lemonade, etc. I love the fizziness, but none of the bad effects!
By the way, I just found your blog and it's great! :)

Oh honey----I can't believe a pretty girl like you drinks soda!!!! (They say you can clean toilets with it). You seem way too smart for that. The coconut water is so wonderful for you, you have no idea! It is just a life style change. http://goop.com/newsletter/15/ (Gwenyth Paltrow).
Try seltzer water with lemon or lime, (or bottled water) and hot tea in the morning. You will feel like a new woman with in a month!!
XOXO

In high school I gave up pop for lent and never looked back. I began drinking sweet tea and eventually moved to unsweetened tea. I bought the Mr. Coffee Iced tea maker and am in love with it.

Now days I can't even drink pop without feeling like I'm ingesting syrup.

Good luck!

There really is nothing better for you than water. So I suggest getting a fruit infusion pitcher. They are the best! I like to make strawberry mint

What about seltzer? I've found its a very refreshing, and much healthier, alternative to soda.

Also, I saw your tweets about overnight oats and your hate for greek yogurt. I agree, greek yogurt is disgusting. Try making the overnight oats with weight watchers vanilla yogurt instead of greek yogurt. The nutritionals are fairly similiar but it tastes much better. I just do the oats, weight watchers yogurt, almond milk, a little splenda and some cinnamon and it's delicious!

YOur post made me go to the fridge and get me a DC. I know it´s bad but I don´t drink it all the time. Maybe twice a week? We drink a lot of sparkling water in Europe, Perrier and San Pellegrino, my husband and my kids drink apple spritzer: 1/4 apple juice 3/4 sparkling water.I don´t drink soda but I love cappuccinos and lattes and wine. All the healthy european stuff ;)

omg. I am addicted to Diet Coke! If I don't have one, I get a headache. It's my morning coffee!

Yep, just bought that exact same kind of coconut water this weekend, but it does taste a little funny. I do think it would be great with a splash of pineapple and some vodka! ;-)

My RD always suggests seltzer w/ 2 oz of 100% juice...Tart Cherry juice is a good choice and awesome for inflammation.
I'm also a fan of green tea mixed with seltzer.

One of my co-workers staged an impromptu intervention the other day at work as I was putting my FIVE (!!!) cans of DC into the fridge... She pulled the whole "I need to stop drinking them too, we can do it together" business... I know how terrible it is, but ohhh my goodness it is so hard to get through the day without them! lol, I am DEF a DC addict!

The raspberry ice crystal light, as well as their regular lemonade flavor, really IS good though!
