PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Toemageddon

Toemageddon

Yesterday will hereby be known as the day that I thought my toe was going to fall off. Monday night, I got my standard pedicure at my salon I've been going to for nearly 2 years. My salon is super-clean and they always use freshly sterilized tools from plastic wrap. My girl tugged at a cuticle on my big toe, but it didn't bleed, it just kind of hurt. I went about my business.

Tuesday morning I woke up and noticed my big toe was a little sore. Not phased, I went on to my work event and walked around in closed toed heels. Big mistake.

I got home Tuesday night pretty late and had some stuff to do, so I didn't get settled down until around 11pm. I noticed my toe was kind of throbbing, so I decided to google "toe throbbing after pedicure". It all went downhill from there. I went on a 3 hour googling spree of everything from "losing toe from pedicure" to "MRSA from pedicure" "how do I know if I have staph on my toe" ...

If you know me, you know I deal with anxiety in all forms and fashions. If I am flying, the plane is going to crash. If I am going to the top of a skyscraper, a terrorist is going to blow it up. If I have a headache I will convince myself that something else is wrong with me. I am somewhat of a doom and gloom thinker.

Well, the first article I pull up talks about someone getting MRSA from a pedicure and dying. The second one talks about someone getting a staph infection and losing a toe or limb.

Before I know it, it's 3 AM and I am still up convincing myself that I have an infected toe and that I will probably lose my toe. I start thinking about how I will ever wear shoes again. I truly lost it and went into a full on panic rage about this inflamed cuticle.

I got 2.5 hours of sleep Tuesday night. I had a work event on Wednesday morning, so I got up, promptly drove myself to Walgreen's and got antibiotic bandaids, epsom salt, antiseptic spray, and special bandages.

I texted every friend I have that is either a nurse, medical student, or Doctor and sent them pictures of my toe. Most said that it didn't look too bad, but to watch it to get more red or bigger.

This is what putting together an outfit on 2.5 hours of sleep looks like. Those leopard flats are cute, but under them my toe is wrapped up in an antibiotic band-aid.

Today I woke up and the toe seems to be less red. I guess I don't need to go get antibiotics for my toe.

I might be a little crazy, but there's nothing wrong with being too paranoid, right? *insert sarcasm*

Sorry to hear about your toe. I am constantly paranoid about getting toenail fungus from nail salons. I have a serious fear of it.

I LOVE the tangerine cardigan in your OOTD. Where is it from?

the cardi and scarf are from jcrew :)

Heck no you arent too paranoid! I have the same fear! And I have known of people to die from pedicures too! But I think it was from already having an open wound before going...? Not sure.. but whatever it is, something happened to your toe, and I would be just as worried! Hope it gets better soon! Keep neosporin on it!

Haha.......this seems like something I would do. I'm sure all my medical friends LOVE me and all the hypochondria i get from WebMD :)
Glad your toe is feeling better!

It actually made me feel better reading this post...Google is an amazing thing and a not-so amazing thing (it definitely leads to assuming the worst). if it makes you feel any better (this is a little gross), last week i woke up with a sore in my nose and convinced myself I had lupus b/c i had googled "sores in nose"!

I hope your toe continues to get better :)

Nope - you're not too paranoid. This post is the reason I have never had a professional pedicure. I hope it gets to feeling better! :)

I'm so paranoid about getting some flesh eating bacteria from having a pedicure! I had a friend lose a toenail b/c she caught staph at salon here in Lexington.

I had an infected cuticle on my finger a few months back and did the same thing with the googling. I was convinced I was going to the lose the finger! I did end up getting antibiotics for it but it looked a lot worse than your toe. I hope it gets better soon!

Bah ha ha -- such a funny post, not funny that your toe hurts but more of the way you wrote about it!

Hope it feels better today and that your toe nail doesn't fall off ;)

The worst thing you can ever do is google your symptoms--way too many scary stories/scenarios come up in the results!

I'm sure it'll be fine :)

this happened to my pinky toe a few weeks ago and I had to go on anti biotics but it healed pretty quickly!

hope your toe is better soon - and NO, you are not being paranoid. i remember seeing paula abdul's arm in a sling after a bad manicure experience. better safe than sorry, you know? and your OOTD was adorable! wish i could do that well on 8 hours of sleep!

You are definitely NOT paranoid! I got a pedicure 3 summers ago at my regular place, with a new girl (BIG mistake) who felt it was ok to remove my entire cuticle! That ended up with me having to have 2 different surgeries on my toe. Needless to say, I'll never go back there. You did the right thing in getting espsom salts and antibacterial bandaids. Keep them on hand should something like this happen again!

Oh my gosh I absolutely LOVE reading this because we are two birds of a feather! I am such a MAJOR worrier and I will google the smithereens out of anything just to make sure I know all of the horrible things that could happen to me as a result of my red toe, or minor burn on my hand, and the list goes on for days!

I'm a new follower and just love your blog!

I am in your exact situation right now! I know this is an older post but i found it tonight while on my googling spree! Lol.

I got my pedi on Friday and its Monday night...noticed red to the right side of my big toe...looks almost identical to your pic.
She cut my cuticle and pulled it...I didn't see blood but it did hurt at the time for a sec. I always forget to tell them not to cut my cuticles.

Anyway I wore heels last night and now it's sore but not unbearable. Put some neosporin on today and if it gets more red or swollen I think I will go to the doc. :/

Thanks for your post!
