PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: BBL Laser Treatment + Sun Protection + How to Get Rid of Sunspots

BBL Laser Treatment + Sun Protection + How to Get Rid of Sunspots

Summer is almost here and it's a double-edged sword for me because I love the summer but absolutely HATE getting out in the sun.  I am one of those really fair complexion people that doesn't tan, but yet gets tons of freckles and sunspots from being outside for 20 minutes.  I always try to wear a hat and slather myself in sunscreen.  I feel like I have tried my fair share of sunscreens out there and  just recently found my absolute faves with the help of my Dermatologist.

Sun Protection Products:

NeoCutis Journee Daily SPF 35 with PSP- this is the fanciest sunscreen I've ever used but of course, I love it and just had to have it! This one was recommended by my cosmetic dermatologist (who is just as obsessed with skincare as me) because it not only protects from the sun, but it also contains growth hormones so it helps to correct while it's protecting.

Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46- I got samples of this sunscreen from my derm as well and I really like this one too.  I usually save my fancy sunscreen for when I know it will be on my face all day, but if I just need some quick coverage I will grab the Elta MD samples.

Neutrogena Age Shield SPF 110- I grabbed this at Target in a pinch and while I do like it for when I can't find my other sunscreens, it does still seem to leave a little bit of a greasy smelly sunscreen feel which I hate, but like I said, it's good when you just need to slather some sun protection on real quick.

Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen- this is what I use on my body if I know that I will be exposed to sun for longer than walking to and from my car.  I love that it comes in a huge tub and you can just pump out the amount that you need.

Sunshine & Chill Hat - this Betsey Johnson hat is so cute and is only $28 which I feel like is a good price for these catchy phrase straw hats that are popular right now.

Tall Straw Hat - I love a good straw hat for days when I know I will be in the sun and this one from Madewell fits the bill.

Floppy Hat - this hat is from Old Navy and is only $15 and also comes in black!

Sun Correction Products:

Skinmedica Lytera 2.0- I have used this before in the past and I do think it works really well for getting rid of sunspots if you don't want to go to extremes such as prescription hydroquinone (which is the gold standard for getting rid of sunspots).  The new 2.0 formulation was made without retinol, so you can use it without fear that you will start to peel from the retinol.  The regular Lytera does contain retinol so keep that in mind if you purchase.

Mario Badescu Whitening Mask-  I think this mask does help to achieve the appearance of brighter skin.  I think alone it isn't going to get rid of spots, but in combination with other things it works as a supplement to the other products.

Fake Sun:

Jergens Natural Glow- I've seriously used this stuff since college for when I do want a fake tan because it's the only sunless tanner that I have found that doesn't make you too dark and just gives you a little bit of color, which is usually all that I want.

Serious Treatments with BBL Laser:

Now, if you are like me and tend to fancy the extremes, you may want to look into getting IPL (photofacial) or BBL (broadband light laser) to get rid of your sunspots or freckles.  I have been wanting to get something like this done for years and finally just decided to suck it up and get it done because my freckles  and sunspots were getting out of control despite me wearing sunscreen every day.  I chose to get the BBL just because that is the treatment that was available at my Dermatologist's office.  The cost for these treatments vary but I paid $380 dollars for one treatment.

I also got a prescription for Tri-Luma, which I just started using last night.  Tri-luma is a combination cream containing Retin-A, Hydroquinone, and a steroid.  It is indicated to treat melasma and works wonders to rid the skin of pesky spots.  Since it does contain hydroquinone it is recommended to use for one month and then take a month off.  Again, this is prescription, so you will need a dermatologist to write you a RX to get this filled.

Here is what the BBL machine looks like.  I am not gonna lie, it hurt so bad!  I feel like I have a pretty high pain tolerance.  I usually get my botox and fillers with no numbing cream, but this hurt so bad!  I think beauty is pain, so you just have to suck it up and deal with it, but it wasn't pleasant :P

And this is my progress from the BBL.  It will initially make all of your sun damage come to the surface and everything will turn dark brown, then it eventually just flakes off and you are left with bright and even skin.

I hope you all have enjoyed this post and as always please feel free to email me or message me questions.  I am not a licensed medical professional but I do have a lot of experience with skincare :)

I go to Levy Dermatology in Memphis and see Lauren Plyler, NP for those that are curious.  None of this was sponsored and I paid for every bit of it myself :P

Wow, your skin looks incredible! Would you say that it got rid of mostly sun damage, or did you have freckles too? I have wanted to get rid of my freckles my ENTIRE LIFE and the hydroquinone products just haven't done anything for me (although I do think they've helped with the sun damage/melasma on my forehead). I recently started to use Sunday Riley Lactic Acid Treatment, and I think that is helping to make my skin brighter overall. I love the CEO moisturizer as well. I can't remember off the top of my head if you're a fan of Sunday Riley products.

@Kelly- weird ... maybe I got it on a special or something. Or maybe I didn't include sales tax? Who knows.

@Natalie - they are still faintly there (the freckles) but I can tell that most of them are gone.

salicylix sf cream makes the skin shed dead cells from its top layer by expanding the measure of dampness in the skin and dissolving the concrete between the cells. This makes it simpler to shed the skin cells, mellow the top layer of skin, and diminishes scaling and dryness.
