PIPM: Pretty in Pink Megan: Tuesday MixUp

Tuesday MixUp

Last night I wore a new J.Crew dress that I purchased this past weekend.  I was so excited to walk into J.Crew and see a NEON PINK dress hanging on the mannequin.  However, it was the only one in the whole store, so I quickly took it off the mannequin hoping it was my size, and it was!
Isn't it fun? I want every neon color if they have it in more, but I only saw the hot pink.

Can we talk about my hair in these pics? I was all like, "yeaaaaa I am the master of the curling iron now that I've used it ONE time." Well, I attempted the curling iron again and it was a little bit disastrous.  It may not help that I am using the cheapest curling iron possible- one that I got at TJ Maxx for 14 dollars.  My hair would NOT hold the curl at all.  I had the iron on the highest setting and kept my hair in the barrel for a while.  Every time I would spiral my hair out of the barrel it would be stick straight.  I even used Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray right before curling.  Help me hair people.  Help.  I want my hair to look like this:

Or this ...

The Sulta Bombshell from sephora one inch is life changing!

I know this may sound terrible but have your stylist cut into your ends and thin out your ends. Not take any length out but just thin out the ends of your hair.

If you look at both the pictures vs. your hair, their hair is a lot thinner. I had the same problem for a good while, I never could hold a curl, until my stylist told me it's because my hair was too thick and heavy and was weighing down the curl. I've since had it thinned out some and it holds a curl much better.

Also, I don't use hair spray because that weights down hair as well and I've noticed that helps.

Just some things that worked for me!:)

You need to get a Hot Tools curling iron (gold barrel). You can pick them up for cheap at Ulta. They are the only iron, for me, that creates a lasting curl.

Love the pink dress, by the way!

It's 100% the curling iron you were using. I absolutely swear by any Hot Tools curling iron. I have really thick hair and it holds the curl for 3 days if I curl it in 1/2" to 1" sections around my entire head. If you want to use it as a rod, you can just unscrew the hinge and remove the top part. I've also had my hot tools for 2-3 years and never had one problem with it. Get it in a 3/4" size- http://www.hottools.com/product_detail.cfm?product=1101

I would try sprtizing the hair with a little hairspray ( not too much)and wrapping the hair around the curling iron. You can't go by Olivia Palermo, because those are extensions, they tend to cooperate a little better than your own hair. Also, if you plan on getting another curling iron, try CHI or Hot Tools.

I'll second the comments on your hair being too thick to hold the curl. Unless you're curling very small, thin sections, it's probably just too long and heavy to hold a bit tighter of a curl, like Olivia's. I recently had my hair layered and my stylist thinned out my ends and it definitely helped create more volume and movement, plus hold the curl better.

I love the Hot Tools curlin iron too. I think mine is 1.5 or 2 inch. My hair will only hold a curl when I spritz it with a heat serum or spray.

Love the dress and love that it's not too short. I hate when shirt style dresses are so short that they look like you're doing the Walk of Shame in a frat boys shirt. Lol

girl! you need a good curling iron. like helen of troy from sally's. and get a small barrel, like 1 in. or 1 1/2 in. to get looking like that picture. also, bumble and bumble grooming creme is DA BOMB. my gay guy hair genius uses it on my hair, works SO good! do it! xo

You need a hot curling iron and a good heat protective spray for the first hair look. Try the protective spray by Chi - it helps hold the curl. I have a Babylis curling iron that's awesome - from the UK though. Try one by Chi or GHD - small barrel like1 inch or maybe 1 1/2. For the second look, ibet you'd need a curling wand or bigger curling iron. The heat seems to be the ticket for me. Also, don't comb through curls at all until they've cooled and I find it helps to set with Elnett hairspray... Hope this helps!

I think adding some more layers will help. I have the same problem and the more layered my hair the better the curl holds.I also like to spray my hair with holding spray while my hair is damp, before drying. Then tons of spray after.

I'll reiterate the Hot Tools comment! I have a 1.25" barrel and I love it. It was only about $25 on Amazon, and it is amazing. It gets very hot and my curls last all day, sometimes even two days!

Love the neon pink. I just picked up the pink jean skirt and love it just hoping it is not too 1980's on me! I need hair tips too. My hair never holds curls.

I agree that you have thicker hair than the pictures. I have to do a couple things to keep the curl in my hair. First, make sure my stylist takes some weight out of the ends. Second, make sure my shampoo & conditioner aren't too heavy or "smoothing". The terax shouldn't weigh too much if you're still using that. Then third, I have to use a HOT curling iron. That Pro one from Walmart that Nina likes works better than my hot tools ones, for me at least. Since you hair dry your hair it should help too.

Hi! My hair goes through stages where it won't hold curl at all either. First, I have to make sure my stylist takes some weight out of the ends or troublesome areas. Since your hair appears heavier than the celebrities, this could be your problem. Second, smoothing or heavy products tend to make curls fall out. Third, a HOT curling iron is vital. I love the Pro one from Walmart that Nina recommends. It works better than Hot Tools for me. The Sultra works well and will definitely give the Lily Aldridge look but won't look polished like Olivia. Lastly, air drying really helps with the hold.

Curling irons have NEVER worked for me--even the expensive salon quality ones! Use a flat iron. That's how I achieve those curls and they last for days!!!

Love the dress! I use Redken Hot Sets spray before curling, and it works great. If I curl w/o it, my hair is pin straight in a minute.

Hot Tools curling irons work great! And did you get one that was just the barrel a while back?! Those seem to tricky to me, but I thought I remembered you posting a video using one.

Well first of all, your hair already looks really pretty! second, what works for me is to let my ends air dry with some sort of curling product in them. i really like catwalk curls rock balm. just a little bit of product and you can twist a few pieces with your fingers before it dries. then the curling iron doesn't have to work so hard!

Sultra "The Bombshell" curling rod... all you need. Trust me.

I use a flat iron that also has hot panels on the sides so it helps curl your hair. It by baby bliss and it works amazing. Whenever I curl my hair I get tons of complements and its take half the time a curling iron used to.

megan - you don't have to post this comment...i just didn't know how to reach you. have you seen "the shops" at target? i had no idea they were releasing any new designers and stumbled on "the webster" line (which is know isn't technically a designer). i saw some cute pieces but was with my husband who was on a mission to get cleaning supplies *only* and i couldn't browse. i finally have some time to head back there tomorrow to take a closer look, but wondered if you'd seen the line (and the other "shops") and if you planned to do a review. thanks!

you look absolutably adorable in that pink dress btw.

Try turning your curling iron horizontally instead of vertically. Also, instead of starting your curl at the bottom and rolling up, insert the barrel in closer to your scalp and then rotate the hair INTO the iron whilst keeping the iron stationary. This helps to heat the entire hairshaft evenly instead of your ends being super curly and the middle/top being flat. ;)

Just a few tips!
